Ethics is everywhere is my everyday life. Should we plagiarize other people’s answer in exam is an ethical question. Should we throw paper on the ground is also an ethical question. As a say going, life is a TV play with an uncertain ending. So, what about understanding ethics from a TV play?
Dwelling Narrowness is a hot TV play in china recently. It tells us the story of experience of two sisters in a big city and reflects the problem of property prices’ rising crazily.
There are 5 main characters in this TV play.
Character1: haiping. She is the older sister of haizao. She stayed in the big city after graduation and work hard everyday trying to buy an own house in this city.
Character2: haizao. She is the younger sister of haiping. She was persuaded by her sister to stay in the city and found a job after living with her sister for several months.
Character3: sucun. He is the husband of haiping, living with haiping in a little rent room.
Character4: xiaobei. He is the boyfriend of haizao. He is just a ordinary white-collar worker but loves haizao very much. And they plan to get married.
Character5: Secretary Song. He is the secretary of mayor who has money and power both. He has a happy family with his wife and daughter. He accidentally lost heart to haizao in a dinner party.
As the story going on, each character has to face his or her ethical dilemma.
After carefully choosing, haiping determined to buy a house as quickly as she can. But the down payment is too high to pay. Having asked a amount of money from her parents and drew out all her deposit, there is still a big shortage of money. So haiping requires her husband sucun to ask for 60,000 RMB from his parents.
Now, sucun is trapped in a ethical dilemma: should he ask his poor parents for money or reject wife’s requirement.
Let’s take those 3steps to resolve the dilemma.
Step 1. Analyze the consequences.
Reject wife’s requirement: that may result to a bad relationship between them. And having their own house is their corporate dream. They have struggle for it for many years. It’s so close to the dream. Rejecting means the breaking of dream.
Ask for money from parents: His parents are very poor. It is very difficult for them to give so much money. Once they give the money, they may suffer more heavy work and live a worse life.
Step 2. Analyze the actions.
Reject wife’s requirement: It is not an egregious requirement. He also wants to make wife happy.
Ask for money from parents: His parents raised him up by a lot of hard working. It is the time he support his parents. He should not still ask for money from them now.
Step 3. Make a decision.
Finally, susun give 60,000 RMB to haiping. Hoever, the money not comes from his parents. He borrows it from others at a high interest.
As definition of the ethical relativism tells, “where the traditions of your society, your personal opinion, and the circumstances of the present moment of define your ethical principles’. Susun is a kind-hearted person and he also loves his wife very much. So he choose to not hurt his wife and parents neither.
The story is going on.
Having the 60,000 RMB given by her husband, haiping was very happy. But not long, she was so sad to find that she is still another 20,000 RMB to pay the down payment. So she decided to borrow money from her young sister haizao. Haizao consented right now. However, haizao don’t have her own money. She asked her boyfriend xiaobei to borrow their deposit which is going to be used in their marriage.
An ethical dilemma comes to xiaobei here.
Step 1. Analyze the consequences.
Give the money to haiping: they will have no money to hold a good marriage in a short time. And He doesn’t know how long the money can get back.
Stay the money: haizao may be not happy about this behavior. It may have some influence on the relationship between them. And haiping, his future relative, also will has a worse impression in him.
Step 2. Analyze the actions.
Give the money to haiping: haiping used to give a lot of great help to haizao, his future wife. Now she has problem. It is right to help her.
Stay the money: It is the money used in his family and his life, not for other people. And he dose not have some affection to haiping.
Step 3. Make a decision.
Xiaobei decided that he won’t borrow money to haiping.
Xiaobei is a 80s-young. He cares more about himself. But if it is his own sister, he may lend the money.
After borrowing money from Secretary Song, they became more and more close. However, one day xiaobei find the relationship of haizao and Secretary Song accidently. He was hurt deeply and left their house. Haizao is regretful and lonely. But now, Secretary Song came to her house and took good care of her.
So what will haizao choose in this situation.
Step 1. Analyze the consequences.
Go to find xiaobei back: they may continue to have their happy two person’s world and have their together future life.
Together with Secretary Song: He can give a lot of money and care to her. She can live a rich life that she lives in a big house instead of narrow original room and have enough money to buy many luxuries which she can not afford before.
Step 2. Analyze the actions.
Go to find xiaobei back: xiaobei is the one she loves.
Together with Secretary Song: he helped her a lot and takes care of her well. However, she will become a mistress who hurt other’s family and is looked down by others.
Step 3. Make a decision.
Haizao get together with Secretary Song.
Haizao is a cowardly and dependant girl. She seldom has her own point and decision. Even staying this city is decision which made by her sister, not herself. She is afraid that xiaobei will forgive her and she has fallen into the help and protection those Secretary Song gave.
After haizao gave 20,000 RMB which she borrowed from Secretary Song, haiping have enough money finally. Paying the money, haiping just need to wait for several month then she can live in her own house. However, she sadly found that her daughter , who she sent to hometown raised by her old parents for saving money, have become unfamiliar with her.
So what should she do? Should she get her daughter back from her hometown?
Step 1. Analyze the consequences.
Take daughter back: the cost of daily life will be higher. But she has the chance to develop the love between she and her daughter.
Let daughter be raised in hometown: she can continue to save money and her daughter will be more and more unfamiliar with her.
Step 2. Analyze the actions.
Take daughter back: child should be raised and educated by parents.
Let daughter be raised in hometown: It is really hard to save money for them. The cost of living in city is so expensive and them are not rich.
Step 3. Make a decision.
Haiping’s decision is taking her daughter back. Nothing is more important than love between child and parents. Love has intrinsic value while money only has instrumental love. Money can not buy true love. Haiping understand it, which haizao don’t understand.
The outcome of this TV play is not meaning to me now. Every character faced many ethical dilemmas in their lives. It just like our real lives, trapped in ethical dilemma always. In fact, a lot of viewers said that this TV play is too real, too close to our life and society. Most of plots are almost same with the true situation in the society.
The Golden rule is that do unto others as you would have them do unto you. However, it is human nature to seek own profit. We had better to learn to often use ethical thinking in usual life.
